NCC has been awarded a turnkey contract by Hemsö to lead the sustainable redevelopment of the “S” building at Mälardalen University in Västerås, Sweden. The €13.1m (approx. SEK 150m) project will see a former educational facility transformed into modern office space with a strong focus on climate optimisation and material reuse.
Originally constructed by NCC in 1994, the 6,000 m² building spans three floors and a basement. The new scheme, developed in close collaboration with Hemsö, aims to become one of the first projects in Sweden to achieve Miljöbyggnad Gold 4.0 certification for refurbishment, a benchmark for sustainability in building standards.
“This is an exciting, multi-faceted and innovative project that focuses on reuse and sustainability. It has been invaluable for us to have a contractor involved at such an early stage in the process,” said Thomas Wall, Project Manager at Hemsö. “We’ve been able to focus on climate optimisation already in the design phase and have identified several opportunities for reuse.”
From reused windows and plasterboard to carpets and technical installations, the project is pushing the boundaries of circular construction. “Being able to refurbish, reuse or purchase reclaimed items instead of buying new will be the biggest challenge,” added Anders Lindkvist, Production Manager at NCC Building Sweden.
Planning began in autumn 2024, with construction set to start in May 2025 and completion targeted for late 2026. The project represents a return for NCC, not just to the site it originally built, but to a renewed commitment to sustainable innovation in the built environment.
