Construction starts at iconic Silos on Zeeburgereiland in Amsterdam (NL)

The teams of House of Jim, Vink Bouw, Elephant Architecture, Grayfield and Filmtheater Rialto announce the start of the construction of the iconic Silos on Zeeburgereiland in Amsterdam.

The three former water purification silos that are still preserved will be topped up and transformed into a modern complex for working, staying and recreation. The project has been certified with the highest attainable sustainability label BREEAM Outstanding.

The Silos, once part of the sewage treatment plant of the East district, has always played a prominent role in the cityscape of Zeeburgereiland. In the meantime, the Silos are largely surrounded by the new buildings of the Sportheldenbuurt.

Project architect Peter van Gelder of Elephant: "We have chosen to combine the historic Silos with a modern addition that contrasts with the rough concrete of the original structures.

At a height of 25m the Silos will be connected by a publicly accessible roof park with a panoramic view of the Markermeer, among other things.

The Silos will supplement the mostly residential neighbourhood with restaurants, offices, sports, and culture. The redevelopment will include permanent offices and flexible workplaces, Rialto cinema in the old west silo, a large gym in the middle silo, and restaurants with a terrace in the east silo. In addition, the different floors of the silos will provide space for events and rental of halls and spaces.

The construction of the Silos will start immediately after the construction holiday, marking the final phase of this unique development. This festive moment will take place in September of this year, after which the construction will be completed over a period of more than two years.
