Resolution Property has submitted a planning application for the transformation of a 0.6 acre canal-side site in London’s Notting Hill district. Resolution acquired the site last year for close to £18m (€22.9m) with plans to create a 100,000ft² (9,290m²) mixed-use hub. Studio RHE has been appointed as the architect.
Resolution Property plans to develop and enhance the site to create a creative hub for digital businesses and independent retailers, together with loft-style upper floor apartments.
Formerly home to reggae label Trojan Records, The Old Gramophone Works at 326 Kensal Road, currently comprises 60,000ft² (5,574m²) across four buildings. The site is adjacent to Portobello Dock, home to designer Tom Dixon’s London headquarters, Stevie Parle’s restaurant Dock Kitchen and the head office of Innocent Drinks.
Jacob Loftus of Resolution Property said: "The site, located on the Grand Union Canal will be transformed into a creative-hub for fashion, media and tech businesses and will provide a destination where talent in those sectors can thrive. Using our experience in Soho, Shoreditch and Whitechapel, we will bring together cutting edge workspaces and loft living for the next generation of creative businesses, delivering canal-side dining, living and working."
Richard Hywel Evans, director of Studio RHE, commented: "We drew inspiration for the design from the area’s historic industrial canal side uses, creating a series of dynamic new buildings with a strong sense of place. The mix of new build and reinvented existing buildings, which will feature a range of spaces, from fully flexible offices embracing the latest in workplace and sustainable design, to publicly accessible landscaped courtyards and mews, will create a vibrant new identity for the immediate area."
The site's history as a gramophone works provides an exciting heritage on which to develop an authentic and creative destination.
