The London Borough of Hackney has granted planning consent for Shoreditch Highgate Hotel, located at 201-207 Shoreditch High Street, East London. The project is being developed by owner Highgate Holdings and designed by Gensler.
Highgate Shoreditch Hotel is a 29,600m² (319,000ft²) commercial building that comprises a 200-room hotel, as well as 11,900m² (127,724ft²) of commercial space, which will include office space with shared amenities.
The mixed-use scheme provides additional investment in Shoreditch’s wider regeneration programme, including the creation of 100 construction jobs and 804 jobs for the local area.
Shoreditch Highgate Hotel will be Highgate Holdings’ first hotel in London, and will build on a portfolio of 40,000 hotel bedrooms globally that includes iconic New York hotels such as The Knickerbocker on Times Square, The Refinery, The Quin, Westhouse and Row NYC.
Gensler’s architects have previously designed Ritz Carlton Hotel and Residences, Los Angeles and Dubai, Fairmont Hotel Pittsburgh, The Beverly Hills Hotel and Bungalows and Denver International Airport, Hotel and Transit Center, Denver.
Duncan Swinhoe, regional managing principal, Gensler commented: “We are honoured to be working with Highgate on what is set to become a valuable asset for local professionals and the residents of East London. The secured planning permission is a testament to the close working relationship between Gensler and our colleagues at the London Borough of Hackney.
“Thoughtful architecture is at the heart of our proposal and our design respects Shoreditch’s rich industrial legacy, while providing local entrepreneurs and creative businesses with office space and shared amenities. We are confident that Shoreditch Highgate Hotel will deliver jobs and opportunities for local people – and contribute to the area’s creative and cultural fabric for many years to come.”
The project is due to break ground in Q2 2016 and the hotel is expected to be complete by the end of 2018.
