Construction begins on €30m Jihlava Multipurpose Arena (CZ)

Construction work has begun on c. €30m Jihlava Multipurpose Arena project. The arena will become one of the largest sports, cultural and social venues in the Czech Republic.

The Jihlava Multipurpose Arena, located in the central city of Jihlava, on the border of Bohemia and Moravia, is due to be completed in two years. It is being constructed on the site of the city’s rundown hockey stadium, built in 1956, and should help to revitalise this district. A four-building multifunctional venue will feature an adaptable ice rink, a rooftop running track, a gym as well as a sports academy, hospitality zones and shops. The complex will have a capacity for 5,600 spectators. It was designed by the Chybik + Kristof, architectural studio.

"We envisioned the Jihlava Multipurpose Arena as a deeply versatile complex, whose various functions are reflected at once in the technical structure, the landscaping and the aesthetics of the buildings. In integrating multiple purposes, we took significant consideration of their various audiences, thereby seeking to reflect the city’s diverse social and demographic groups and to encourage their interaction. More than a centre for sports and events, the arena is to be a social campus for the city – to be used by the people and thus designed for the people" said Ondrej Chybík and Michal Kristof, founding architects of Chybik + Kristof
