VIVID, a leading provider of affordable homes in the south of England, has commenced construction in Bursledon on a development that will see the creation of 12 new homes adjacent to The Brickworks Museum.

The scheme will feature seven social rent homes and five shared ownership homes, designed to integrate with the area's historic character. VIVID is collaborating with Imperial Homes to deliver these two- and three-bedroom houses, which will incorporate traditional Flemish bond brickwork, reflecting the aesthetic of the former workers’ cottages in the vicinity.

The land acquisition from The Brickworks Museum has facilitated the restoration of two Grade II* listed Victorian brick drying sheds. These structures, originally built in 1897, played a crucial role in brick production, with the site historically manufacturing over 20m bricks annually. The restoration aims to preserve these historic elements and create opportunities for future use.

“This scheme has been in the making for seven years. We’re excited to now be in a position where we can see it come to fruition and play a part in preserving history at the same time,” said Tristan Samuels, Group Development and New Business Director at VIVID.

“We are delighted to partner with VIVID again. The delivery of this scheme highlights two local economic benefits, with the delivery of much-needed affordable homes, along with the restoration of two Grade II* listed brick drying sheds,” commented Ben Olds, Land Director at Imperial Homes.

“This project took time to come to fruition owing to the pandemic. We are delighted that it is now nearing completion and our two drying sheds have been granted a new lease of life. We will be looking for new uses for the sheds moving forwards,” added Andy Elford, Chair of Bursledon Brickworks Museum Trust.

This development not only supports the demand for affordable housing in the region but also plays a significant role in preserving a key part of Bursledon’s industrial heritage, creating a full-circle moment where bricks used in past developments were originally produced.
