Team CS makes preliminary design of new Central Station of Rotterdam (NL)

The architects agency Team CS will make the preliminary design for the new Central Station of Rotterdam. Team CS, a combination of the Amsterdam agencies Benthem Crouwel Architekten and Meyer en Van Schooten Architecten and the Rotterdam agency West 8, will finish the preliminary design before the end of 2004.

The assignment to the architect has taken long time. At the end of last year it was already announced that Team CS would be proposed, but the discussions with the clients about the work, the fee and the legal aspects took quite some time.

International atmosphere
According to the selection commission, the exhibit of Team CS carries out the right international atmosphere, that matches the Central Station of Rotterdam. The station will have a transparent hall and in the interior softly shining materials will dominate. The development will start at the end of next year and will be finished in 2009 or 2010. A budget of € 400 million is available for the new CS. Clients are the ministries of Spatial Planning, Housing and the Environment and of Transport, Public Works and Water Management, NS (the Dutch Railways), the Stadsregio and the municipality of Rotterdam.

Champagne glasses
Three years ago, the previous board of Rotterdam already came with an ambitious plan for the area. That draw attention especially because of the champagne glasses that the architects had drawn in their design. The State disapproved of the plan, because it was far to expensive.
