ATRA Doftana to expand eco-luxury resort with €7.2m EU-backed investment

Prahova’s flagship design hotel to triple guest capacity and add wellness infrastructure in sustainable upgrade

ATRA Doftana, the award-winning lakeside retreat in Valea Doftanei, has announced a major expansion and upgrade of its resort following a €7.2m investment. The project, led by Top Resorts SRL, is co-financed by the European Union’s Just Transition Programme via ADR Sud-Muntenia.

Situated along the shores of Lake P?ltinu in Prahova County, ATRA’s expansion will introduce new eco-conscious accommodation units and outdoor wellness infrastructure, increasing built area by over 2,000?m². Known for its award-winning minimalist architecture and integration with the surrounding forest landscape, the resort will strengthen its positioning as a leading premium nature destination in Romania.

“The expansion will deliver a richer guest experience and stronger operational resilience,” said representatives of Top Resorts. The investment supports long-term sustainable tourism growth, aligning with EU goals while making Valea Doftanei more attractive for slow-tourism and corporate retreat markets.

For investors and developers, the timing is key. Hospitality demand in Central and Eastern Europe is on the rise, especially for green-certified leisure assets. The upgraded ATRA resort will meet high ESG standards, adding long-term asset value and potential for international operator partnerships or fund-backed rollouts.

With growing consumer appetite for wellness-driven, nature-based experiences, the expansion is expected to increase capacity by more than threefold, addressing a sharp post-pandemic shift toward regional destinations with low environmental impact. The upgrade includes thermal spa components and a new events pavilion, designed to attract year-round traffic.

ATRA Doftana’s strategic evolution is a strong signal to regional investors that well-positioned boutique assets, when backed by smart capital and sustainable design, can deliver both high occupancy and resilient margins.
