Stoneweg has finalised the acquisition of Barcelona’s emblematic Comèdia cinema building, a landmark at the intersection of Passeig de Gràcia and Gran Via. This €100m+ investment will see the transformation of the 6,700 m² site into the Carmen Thyssen Museum, in collaboration with Baroness Carmen Cervera. The project is being developed under Stoneweg’s Places & Experiences platform, aimed at revitalising iconic urban spaces through cultural value.
The future museum will house part of Baroness Thyssen’s renowned collection of 19th and 20th-century Catalan art alongside contemporary exhibitions. “This project is about preserving Catalonia’s cultural heritage while introducing global audiences to its modern creative pulse,” said Baroness Carmen Cervera, the visionary behind the collection and museum concept.
The building, a part of the historic Palau Marcet and protected as a Cultural Asset of Local Interest since 2000, will be renovated by Casper Mueller Kneer Architects and Spanish firm OUA. The architectural intervention will balance preservation and innovation, offering a destination that bridges historic grandeur with contemporary relevance.
This initiative is part of Stoneweg’s growing cultural portfolio in Southern Europe, which includes the 2024 transformation of the Imax building for the America’s Cup Experience and upcoming projects like the Godó i Trias factory exhibition centre. Investors will take note of Stoneweg’s unique strategy: unlocking long-term value by repurposing heritage assets into cultural anchors that drive tourism, economic activity and foot traffic in prime urban corridors.
“The museum will honour the past and inspire the future. It’s not just a building, it’s a legacy,” added Baroness Carmen Cervera. With backing from legal advisors Graells March Abogados, consultants Savills España and financial partner Banca March, the project underscores a rare synergy between culture, commerce and community in one of Europe’s most visited cities.
