St Helens Council will meet later this week to approve spending c. €10.3m to design the town’s proposed multi-modal transport hub.
St Helens Council is waiting on the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority to sign off a c. €32.4m grant for the project, but that is not expected to happen until later this year.
In order to expedite the c. €49.3m interchange project before grant approval, the council will cover the cost of the design work. The project is considered essential for the transformation of St Helens town centre, providing a state-of-the-art bus station and necessary facilities for passengers to meet long-term public transport needs.
St Helens Council’s cabinet is also expected to approve the drawdown of c. €8.5m from the c. €79.2m pot of funding set aside to deliver the first phase of the town centre regeneration project.
Phase one of the c. €114.6m regeneration of St Helens – which is being delivered by ECF – would see the delivery of a 120-bedroom globally branded hotel, 64 Passivhaus homes, c. 6,967m2 of office space, and c. 1,022m2 of modern retail space, along with an overhaul of the public realm.
VINCI has been selected to deliver phase one, which will see the council-owned Hardshaw Centre demolished.
