Falu Municipality commissions NCC to build €23m school in Sundborn (SE)

NCC has been commissioned by Falu Municipality to build the Sundborn School in Sundborn, north of Falun in Dalarna. The project is a turnkey contract in partnering form with an order value of approximately c. 23m.

We are pleased to deepen our partnership with NCC and continue construction work with a new pre-school and school as well as the creation of a meeting point for Sundborn. For us, investing in rural areas is important. Here, we are investing in Sundborn in a combined effort with the companies in the municipal group to achieve the best possible benefit for the residents of Sundborn,” said Paula Aspfors, chairman of the Falu Municipal Services Committee.

NCC’s contract includes the demolition of existing buildings, which have already been completed, and the construction of a new school and sports hall. The new two-story school building will have a total area of c. 7,000m2 and will accommodate 240 students from preschool to grade six. The school building will house areas for education, a kitchen and a canteen. The building will have a wooden facade and a hybrid frame of laminated timber, steel and concrete.

There are major advantages to building schools in partnering form, which is something we can see already with the Sundborn School. Here, in close cooperation with Falu Municipality, we have already identified several opportunities for reuse and energy savings. For example, we will recycle the window glass from the old school, which reduces carbon emissions by as much as 50% compared with newly manufactured windows," said Henrik Landelius, Head of NCC Building Sweden.

Construction began in September 2023 and the new school is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2025 and ready for occupancy for the start of the spring semester in 2026.
