AM opens its first shopping centre in Spain (NL/ES)

Espacio León, the first shopping centre in Spain to be developed by AM, was officially opened on the evening of Tuesday, 19 October 2004. The shopping centre comprises 37,000 m2 of retail and leisure facilities, including a total of 110 shops. The centre is expected to have around 10 million visitors over the next 12 months.

The project represents a turnover volume of around €105 million. AM sold Espacio León to CGI (Commerz Grundbesitz Investmentgesellschaft mbH) in June 2003.

The Regional Minister of Development of the Castille and León Government and the Mayor of León opened León’s first shopping centre. Espacio León is the largest shopping centre in the province of Castille and León. It is situated on the northern side of the city of León, on the left bank of the River Bernesga, where a major urban development is being created. The centre lies just three minutes from the city centre and serves a catchment area with a population of around 200,000.

The mall is on three levels and has 110 shops offering an attractive and complete mix of store types, restaurants and bars, leisure facilities and a multiplex cinema. Chains represented in Espacio León include Cinebox, Zara, Supercore, MediaMarkt, Forum Sport, Hennes & Mauritz, Burger King, The Phone House, Café del Mercado, Bershka, Pull & Bear, Springfield, Bata and Poly. For some of these chains, it is the first time they have opened stores in the León region.

Design and concept
The concept was produced by AM’s in-house design team, T+T Design. At the insistence of the city authorities, the shopping centre, which has a sculptural theme, includes boulevards, public spaces and landscaped areas as important elements of the scheme.

Growth of AM in Spain
Espacio León is the first of a series of shopping centres being developed by AM in Spain. The company has projects either already under construction or in preparation in Girona, Madrid (El Cañaveral and Espacio Torrelodones) and La Coruña, among other locations.
