Industrial production down by 0.9% in euro-zone

Down by 0.2% in EU15

Seasonally adjusted industrial production decreased by 0.9% in the euro-zone in July 2002 compared to June 2002, Eurostat, the Statistical Office of the European Communities in Luxembourg, estimates today. Production had increased by 1.0% in June, after being stable in May. Output in the EU15 decreased by 0.2% in July 2002, after a fall of 0.1% in June and a rise of 0.3% in May.

In July 2002 compared to July 2001, industrial production fell by 0.5% in the euro-zone and by 0.7% in the EU15.

Monthly comparison
In July 2002, intermediate goods decreased by 1.0% in the euro-zone and remained unchanged in the EU15. Capital goods fell 0.5% in the euro-zone and also remained unchanged in the EU15. Energy decreased by 0.6% and by 1.0% respectively. Durable and non-durable consumer goods decreased by 0.5% and 0.9% respectively in the euro-zone and by 0.1% and 0.4% in the EU15.

In July, and among the Member States for which data are available, the largest increases were observed in the United Kingdom5 (3.4%), Belgium (1.4%) and Greece (1.1%). The strongest decreases were registered in Ireland (-15.1%), Finland and Portugal (both -1.4%).

Annual comparison
In July 2002 and compared to July 2001, durable consumer goods registered the largest falls with annual rates of -3.5% in the euro-zone and -4.0% in the EU15. Capital goods fell by 1.7% in the euro-zone and by 2.2% in the EU15. Non-durable consumer goods fell by 1.1% in the euro-zone and by 0.7% in the EU15. Intermediate goods and energy increased by 0.2% and 1.3% respectively in the euro-zone and by 0.1% each in the EU15.

Compared to July 2001 and among the Member States for which data are available, the United Kingdom5 and Portugal (both -2.0%) and France (-1.9%) recorded the largest decreases. The largest increases were registered in Ireland (15.5%), Finland (5.2%) and Luxembourg (5.1%).
