American furniture giant Crate & Barrel to set up shop in Turkey

According to Turkish newspaper Milliyet, Doğuş group is bringing American furniture giant Crate & Barrel to Turkey. 


Crate & Barrel will open its first Turkish shop in Akasya shopping center in Istanbul/Acıbadem. The shop is expected to start operating by February 2014.


The Chicago-headquartered company was established by Gordon and Carole Segal in 1962. It currently employs 7,000 people and owns 160 stores in North America. The usual size of Crate & Barrel stores is 3,000 m². The company’s turnover was around US $4 billion last year.


The furniture company opened its first store outside the US in 2008 in Canada. It continued its expansion in 2010 through a franchise store in Dubai with Al Tayer group and last January it entered Asia opening a store in Singapore. Turkey will be the fourth country it expands in outside the US. 


Akasya Shopping and Life Center is included in Akasya Acıbadem project, developed by SAF real estate investment trust (REIT). The shopping mall is expected to be opened in January 2014 and will extend over 35,000 m². 250 brands are expected to open within the shopping mall.
