Martin Wheeler named executive chairman of Rengen to spearhead next phase of growth

In a strategic move signalling its intent to scale operations and attract institutional capital, Rengen Developments has appointed real estate finance veteran Martin Wheeler as Executive Chairman. The co-founder of Longbow Real Estate Capital brings over 35 years of sector leadership and joins the Bath-based developer as it looks to expand its presence in the UK’s undersupplied student and co-living markets.

Wheeler's appointment comes as Rengen surpasses €585m in gross development value (GDV) delivered to date across schemes in Bath, Bristol, Exeter, Bournemouth, Southampton, Worcester, Birmingham, Newcastle and London. Known for its small-format purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) and co-living developments, the company is targeting further institutional partnerships, with Wheeler's expertise critical to scaling its capital market strategy.

“We are delighted Martin has joined us as Executive Chairman and will help drive our next phase of growth and development as a company,” said Iestyn Lewis, CEO of Rengen. “His unique knowledge of the intricacies of the UK real estate and capital markets will be essential as we drive more growth within the platform.”

Wheeler, who was previously Senior Advisor at ICG Real Estate and continues to advise MCR Property Group, has raised over €5.85bn in institutional and sovereign capital and overseen more than €8.2bn in real estate transactions. Investors will note the significant opportunity in Rengen’s focus markets—Bath and Bristol, which face acute shortages in student housing despite rising demand. This demand-supply imbalance underpins strong rental growth and offers long-term income resilience for capital partners.

“Iestyn and the team have built an impressive business in the last 15 years, providing vital development and operational expertise for the previously underserved living sectors in the South of England and beyond,” said Martin Wheeler. “I am excited to have the opportunity to apply my experience building and growing real estate businesses to the Rengen platform as we deliver on our ambitious growth strategy.”

Founded in 2010, Rengen grew from the engineering and construction pedigree of its sister company, Iesis Group. Today, it provides fully integrated services spanning land sourcing, project delivery and asset management, positioning it as a strong partner for forward-funding and joint venture opportunities in one of the UK’s most resilient asset classes.
