Albert Heijn, the leading Dutch supermarket chain owned by Ahold Delhaize, has appointed Margaret Versteden-van Duijn as its new CEO, effective 1 September 2025. Versteden, currently the CEO of bol, will also assume leadership of sister companies Etos and Gall & Gall, marking a strategic move in Ahold Delhaize’s executive reshuffle.
She succeeds Marit van Egmond, who will step down on 1 May. The interim period will be covered by senior leadership until Versteden officially takes over. According to a company press release, “With Margaret, Albert Heijn chooses a leader who not only brings extensive retail experience and technological vision but also deeply understands societal needs.”
A dual Dutch-Australian national, Versteden-van Duijn has held global roles at Bain & Company, Nike, and Boston Consulting Group, before joining bol a decade ago. In 2021, she became CEO and led the company’s transformation into the Benelux’s most prominent online retail platform. “Margaret has successfully transformed bol from an online store into the leading online retail platform in the Benelux,” said Claude Sarrailh, CEO of Ahold Delhaize Europe & Indonesia. “Her ability to drive innovation, growth, and customer-focused solutions aligns perfectly with the ambitions of Albert Heijn, Etos and Gall & Gall.”
In her new role, Versteden-van Duijn will oversee the strategic direction of three of the Netherlands’ most iconic retail brands. “Albert Heijn, Etos and Gall & Gall are iconic brands, deeply rooted in society. It is an honour to soon be part of that,” she stated. “As a certified B Corp organisation, we can take meaningful steps forward—building a healthier, more social and sustainable society.”
Her appointment signals a deeper commitment to purpose-driven retail, a trend increasingly shaping the future of the sector. With her blend of international experience and local insight, Versteden-van Duijn is expected to play a pivotal role in the evolution of Ahold Delhaize’s Dutch retail operations.
