Hammerson has signed Sports Direct for a flagship 17,000 ft² UK store at its newly refurbished Monument Mall retail scheme in Newcastle. The letting will see Sports Direct, the sportswear retail chain founded by Newcastle Football Club chairman Mike Ashley, likely move from Eldon Square in the city to the former Peacocks store fronting Northumberland Street. The store will be spread over basement, ground and first floor and is set to open in January fronting on to Newcastle’s Metro. The flagship letting follows a string of recent deals at the scheme including brands like Hugo Boss and The White Company.
Monument Mall has undergone a £15mln refurbishment to provide an additional 14,000 ft² of retail space, featuring double height shop fronts for the first time. The newly designed scheme includes eight stores on Blackett Street, two major units on Northumberland Street, and a Sainsbury’s store on the concourse level of the Metro at lower ground level.
