British Land appoints Joanne McNamara as CEO to drive next phase of growth

UK property giant British Land has appointed Joanne McNamara as its new Chief Executive Officer, marking a significant leadership transition for one of the country's largest listed real estate companies. The appointment signals a continued focus on long-term value creation across high-performing sectors including London campuses and retail parks.

Currently Executive Vice President, Europe at Oxford Properties, Joanne McNamara brings more than two decades of real estate experience and has been instrumental in building Oxford's €9.4bn European portfolio spanning office, retail, logistics and residential assets. Since joining Oxford in 2010, she has played a key role in several landmark investment and development transactions while helping expand the organisation into a team of more than 70 professionals across Europe.

British Land Chairman William Rucker welcomed the appointment, highlighting McNamara's extensive market expertise and leadership credentials.

“I am delighted that Joanne is joining British Land from Oxford Properties, a business we respect and know well as a joint venture partner on the highly successful Leadenhall Building development.

“Joanne is one of Europe’s most respected real estate professionals. With her deep expertise of real estate, valuable experience in the world of private capital and a strong reputation for decisive leadership, she is exceptionally well placed to drive the business forward. On behalf of the Board, I look forward to welcoming her to the team.”

For investors and developers, the appointment is particularly noteworthy as it strengthens British Land's connection to global institutional capital markets. McNamara's experience within OMERS, one of Canada's largest pension funds, comes at a time when access to international capital, strategic partnerships and large-scale mixed-use development expertise is becoming increasingly important across the European real estate sector.

McNamara, who is expected to join British Land by the end of November following a notice period of up to six months, expressed enthusiasm about the opportunity.

“British Land is a business that I have always admired, with an impressive track record of delivering and managing best-in-class places across the UK and an expert team at its helm.

“I am very much looking forward to working with the Board, Executive Committee and all of my new colleagues as we work together to build on what is already a fantastic platform for growth.”

British Land owns or manages a €18.6bn portfolio, with a company share valued at approximately €11.9bn as of 31 March 2026. Market observers will be watching closely to see whether McNamara's track record in large-scale development, institutional partnerships and portfolio diversification accelerates the company's next growth cycle amid evolving investor demand for operationally intensive real estate sectors.
