During the period just ended, the Ministry of Housing, Spatial Planning and the Environment (VROM) was chiefly concerned with the publication of major policy documents on housing, space and the environment. The Cabinet now wishes to switch its attention in particular to the social problems with which citizens are confronted in practice.
Over the coming years the emphasis will therefore be on the implementation of policy, the enforcement of legislation and regulations and the reduction and simplification of the rules. A proposal to this effect will be sent to the Lower House in mid 2003.
Substantively the Ministry is concerned with a sustainable future, a liveable environment and dynamic spatial development. Working on a sustainable future means striking a balance between economic growth and a healthy and pleasant living environment, now and in the future. Strong cities and a vital countryside are key to
the quality of life of the residential environment.
