Northcare and Unum get green light for care home in Edinburgh (GB)

A new 60-bed care home proposed by Northcare Scotland and Unum Partnership, has received planning approval for a site at the corner of St Johns Road and Manse Road in Corstorphine, Edinburgh.

The project addresses the city's care needs and enhances a previously vacant space. The design respects the architectural identity of Corstorphine, aligning with the Conservation Area Character Appraisal to maintain traditional style and historical aesthetics. This development demonstrates Edinburgh’s commitment to integrating essential care facilities within historically significant areas.

The planning process faced challenges, such as structural concerns from neighbouring properties and strict conservation guidelines. These factors influenced the design of the care home, aligning it with modern requirements while respecting the conservation area's character. The development complies with Edinburgh's Local Development Plan, which integrates conservation policies into urban planning and emphasizes high design standards and appropriate materials.

The approval of this project showcases Edinburgh’s thoughtful urban development in conservation areas, balancing heritage with the city’s care needs and setting a precedent for responsible growth in historically significant spaces.
