The Cambridge City Council has given the green light to the plans put forward by the Cambridge Investment Partnership, aiming to create a vibrant new local centre. The c. €63.2m redevelopment initiative for East Barnwell. The project will involve the construction of 120 new council homes, a modern library, and a community centre.
This comprehensive revitalization effort will completely revamp the Newmarket Road junction area, involving the replacement of existing structures such as the Abbey Bowls Club, the library, and a row of shops. In their place, the project aims to provide 42 one-bedroom flats, 61 two-bedroom flats, 12 three-bedroom flats, and four three-bedroom maisonettes.
Councillor Gerri Bird said: “These homes are desperately needed. It is 100% for council tenants, which is the most important thing.”
