A two-mile stretch along the banks of the River Clyde, between Braehead and Renfrew, is set to be transformed by a £500m mixed-use regeneration scheme. A new public-private partnership, Renfrew Riverside, has been formed to develop the scheme. Located on 200 acres of land, the regeneration project will provide 1m sq ft of new business space, a 500,000 sq ft leisure development, 2,100 new homes and a public park.

The residential element will comprise riverside apartments which will connect to family housing in Renfrew, plus a village marina development.

The leisure element of the scheme will include Scotland’s first Xscape snow dome for winter sports. Work is about to start on the Xscape centre and it will be completed by 2006. There will also be cinemas, restaurants and specialist retailers.

The partnership comprises Capital Shopping Centres, which owns Braehead shopping centre, Renfrewshire Council, Scottish Enterprise, Park Lane Estates and Clydeport Properties, which owns much of the riverside land.

Renfrew Riverside Development Director, Richard Cable, commented: “It’s going to provide new jobs, it’s going to bring people close to the river, it’s going to reconnect Renfrew town to the river, which it hasn’t been for many, many years.'

The total development will take around 10 years to complete.
