Temporary tenants get go-ahead to move into TPG building on Oosterdokseiland

The Amsterdam Municipal Executive’s approval of the Stedelijk Museum’s temporary housing in the TPG building on Oosterdokseiland (ODE) has cleared the way for space in the building to be let to other parties for a while. Pakhuis Amsterdam (provisionally called Post Amsterdam), Zwarts & Jansma Architecten, Barking Dog Films, B Visual and the Aviator video production company will start moving into the building on 1st January 2004.

The building became available on 1st October 2003 following TPG’s definitive departure. The joint venture of MAB B.V. of The Hague and Bouwfonds Property Finance of Hoevelaken is the main renter of the TPG building that Ontwikkelings Bedrijf Amsterdam has owned since 2001. They are responsible for developing the overall project (roughly 225,000 m²) that will be built on ODE in the coming years. The temporary tenants named above will be subtenants of MAB/Bouwfonds Property Finance and will rent approximately two-thirds of the building. Their presence in the building will guarantee a stream of visitors of around 250,000 people per year to Oosterdokseiland.

The temporary tenants will begin moving into the building on 1st January 2004. The opening of Post Amsterdam will take place in February and the Stedelijk Museum will open its doors on the island in April 2004.

At the end of the temporary letting of the building, MAB will start putting up a new complex on the site of the TPG building. It will include the existing skeleton of the TPG building. The new complex, designed by Eric van Egeraat Associated Architects, will house 28,000 m² of offices, 4400 m² of shops/leisure facilities and 40 apartments designed by Baumslager Eberle mit Grassmann.

Future
Work is already in progress on clearing the ODE site. Construction of new public library is due to start in April 2004. In 2009, the ODE island will form a new inner-city section covering more than 225,000 m², with a mixture of residential, work, study, recreational and entertainment functions. The new Central Public Library and the Amsterdam Conservatory will be built on ODE along with excellent restaurants, trendy bars, a top-class hotel with associated conference centre, a great variety of shops, rented/owner-occupied homes in various price classes and a variety of different office buildings. Below the entire island there will be a car park with spaces for more than 1500 vehicles and 2500 bicycles.
