Located in the center of one of Madrid's fastest growing areas, the two-level, 218,331-m² complex is an extension of the Ensanche de Vallecas plan, which forms an urban border to the city's busiest transportation artery.

The center features a variety of retail and leisure options, including a hypermarket, large big box anchor and multi-screen cinema. Designers used green space – lush landscaping, leisure area and lagoon – to mask 2,300 surface-level parking spaces. Another 2,700 spaces are available underground.

"La Gavia's excellent location and balance of leisure and retail options have made it an outstanding success in the Madrid metropolitan market," says Piers Mohan, an associate director in RTKL's London office who oversaw the project.

"We are honored to receive this recognition from the AECC."

The award was presented to RTKL at the conclusion of the XII Spanish Conference of Shopping Centers in Bilbao, Spain.
