Renovation of Rietveld Academy

The Amsterdam City Council is to contribute EUR 9 million to the renovation of and new buildings for the Rietveld Academy, named after the architect and furniture designer Gerrit Rietveld (Utrecht 1888-1964), a member of De Stijl movement and in at the nascence of post-war functionalism.

The academy for fine art and design has used the building since 1967. The council wishes to see the academy retain its present location in the Zuidas (a business-focused development taking place along AmsterdamÂ's southern axis) to maintain a multifaceted aspect to the area.
