A new regional bus route, the Zuidtangent, connects Amsterdam Airport Schiphol with major regional industrial and business areas around Amsterdam. The new express bus service runs from Haarlem via Hoofdorp and the airport to Amsterdam Zuidoost borough. Because the bus travels in a traffic-free bus lane, a trip from Haarlem to Schiphol will take only 23 minutes. Buses will run every 7.5 minutes in peak periods. By 2008 the route should be extended to IJmuiden on the coast and to the new residential islands of IJburg, east of the city center.
