Multi Development and ING RED open phase one of City Plaza Nieuwegein expansion (NL)

On Thursday, September 29, 2011, Mayor Backhuijs of Nieuwegein opened the first phase of the expansion of downtown City Plaza. At the same time he officially opened the renovated City Plaza.

The second phase is due to be completed in 2013.



Heino Vink CEO of Multi Corporation said: "This major expansion from a town around a closed mall to an integrated living, working, shopping and relaxing city center is a result of close positive working relationships between each and every party involved."

Downtown City Plaza is doubling its retail space to a total of 56,000 m². When the second phase is complete, in 2013, it will be one of the largest urban developments in the Netherlands. The first phase of the expansion of City Plaza includes 20,000 m² of shops, a parking garage and 163 owner-occupied and rental apartments.

The existing City Plaza (28,000 m² of retail space) has had a major renovation, and the first floor, formerly Food Plaza; complete redevelopment. The new city downtown area now has more than 1,200 additional parking spaces in two garages and two new covered and guarded bicycle parks.

Stadskwartier CV (the collaboration between Multi Development and ING Real Estate Development) together with the Nieuwegein Municipality is responsible for the first and second phase of the expansion of City Plaza. The renovation of City Plaza shopping center was realized by its owner Corio, the investor in the entire city expansion.

Transformation
The town of Nieuwegein has been transformed from having been around a closed mall to an open, diverse and lively city where everything takes place: shopping, working, living and entertainment (theater, restaurants, cafés). With its own architectural identity, it actually feels like the heart of the city where residents of the region meet.

Design
Multi's in-house design company T+T Design, is responsible for the overall concept and masterplan of the expansion of the city of Nieuwegein. The new retail and residential building on the square was designed by Pi de Bruijn of de Architekten Cie. from Amsterdam. Liesbeth van de Pol of DOK Architects from Amsterdam is the architect of the second phase. Bureau B+B for urban planning and landscape architecture design for the new public space. Corio commissioned Greig & Stephenson of London for the design of the renovation of the existing shopping streets.

New quality store formats arrive in Nieuwegein
A large number of shops, not previously present in Nieuwegein have now arrived: The Sting, Saturn, New Yorker, Men at Work, Coolcat, Perry Sport, Espresso, Vodafone and a Jumbo supermarket. The Alderman for Economic Affairs, Mr. Wouter Kolff, opened Saturn in City Plaza.

Living in the city
Above the shops are six elegant residential towers surrounding a charming roof garden. Of the 74 condominiums currently, 4 months before the delivery of the apartments more than 80% are sold. The owner of the rental apartments is ING Dutch Residential Fund.
