Major supermarket for Derby gets the thumbs up (UK)

Land Securities' Meteor Centre in Derby received the thumbs up for a new 100,000-ft² (9,290-m²) food store from Derby City Council last week (April 21, 2011).

This major redevelopment will create nearly 400 jobs, help regenerate the existing retail park and improve shopping and services for Derby's residents and the wider area. The approved plans are for a new supermarket, petrol station, carwash and the reconfiguration of existing units.

Land Securities, Portfolio Manager for Meteor Jack Busby, said: "This is great news for the residents of Derby, the future of the park and the local economy. In this challenging economic climate this is very positive as it will not only help create hundreds of full time and part time jobs but it will also bring forward investment in a property that is in need of reinvigoration.

"This will allow us to provide a much better shopping environment with facilities that meet modern retail requirements. So we're pleased to take plans forward following a robust submission. We're already in talks with various retailers to take the space."

In the past year, Land Securities has carried out extensive studies as part of the submission, which demonstrated that there is demand for a new supermarket. This new store will bring a wider offer and more choice for local residents.

The Meteor Centre is just over 182,000 ft² with 14 retail units and a fast food restaurant. Retailers in the Centre include Focus, Carpetright, DFS, D&M Furniture, Topps Tiles, Staples and Pets at Home.
