Maghull Health Park's €29.3m expansion to be led by ION (GB)

Maghull Health Park, a 404,686m2 (100-acre) NHS site located off Junction One of the M58, is set to undergo a significant expansion as part of Liverpool City Region's life sciences investment zone.

Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust is leading the project, with ION Developments appointed as the development manager for the €29.3m Maghull Health Park expansion. The expansion will involve two phases of construction.

The first phase will see the creation of a Mental Health Digital Research Centre (MHDRC). The MHDRC will feature interactive spaces, augmented reality labs, and accommodation.

The second phase involves the creation of a 29,729m2 science park on an adjoining 97,125m2 site. The science park will offer accommodation for medical research and attract businesses at the forefront of digital and virtual reality technologies.

The architect leading the design is Gilling Dod. The expansion of Maghull Health Park is backed by Liverpool's €148.6m investment zone award, and it is hoped that the project will become a gateway for investors and innovators to transform the future of mental health provision and accelerate product development.

A spokesperson for Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust said: “The trust has commissioned Ion via a development management agreement to undertake an initial feasibility study for the potential development of a Mental Health Digital Research Centre on the Maghull Health Park site. The bid for funds from Liverpool City Region Investment Zone (and others) will dictate the development schedule for this exciting project. Ion will develop the business case and will include the submission of a planning application later this year to Sefton Council once funding has been agreed.”
