Important step forward in plans for extensions to Nieuwegein city center (NL)

Pi de Bruijn of De Architecten Cie. and Liesbeth van der Pol of Atelier Zeinstra Van der Pol, both of Amsterdam, will design the extensions to the shopping center in the Nieuwegein inner city.

The design consists of approximately 35,000 m commercial property (partially replacing existing shops) and approximately 240 residential units. The architects were selected by development syndicate Stadshart Nieuwegein CV (a partnership between ING Real Estate Development and Multi Vastgoed previously AM Vastgoed) in consultation with the investor, Corio, and the Nieuwegein municipality and its Quality team. The architects have meanwhile initiated the preliminary design phase. The design will be ready in spring 2006.

Nieuwegein Inner City
Nieuwegein is building a lively inner city: Over the coming years the municipality and market players will, among other things, realize a new city hall, a central library with a center for the plastic arts, the renovation of and a new large hall in the 'De Kom' theatre, four town squares, a promenade along the Hollandse IJssel, a pedestrian-only shopping street, a doubling of the shopping surface area, high-quality offices, townhouses, a cinema and associated parking areas. In addition, the (traffic) infrastructure will be redeveloped. The total investment will amount to approximately 900 million.
