ICSC Sustainability Working Group develops pan-European BREEAM Retail (EUR)

The International Council of Shopping Centres (ICSC) now has over 13 members' shopping centres across Europe being assessed under the BRE Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM). The ICSC Sustainability Working Group, chaired by Jaap Gillis (COO of Redevco B.V. and and ICSC Trustee), developed the pan-European BREEAM scheme in collaboration with BRE Global.

Duisburg Interior

Forum Duisburg is one of three projects to have already received formal BREEAM certification.

It is specific to shopping centers and drives the sustainability of retail developments throughout Europe, creating a benchmark for their environmental performance.

Three projects have already received formal certification under BREEAM, namely: C&A Eco-Store, Mainz by Redevco Germany, Forum Duisburg, Koenigstrasse by Multi Development Germany and Docks 76 by Unibail-Rodamco.

The benefits of the BREEAM certification include:

- Reduced environmental impacts
- Improved functionality
- Flexibility and durability
- Higher user satisfaction
- Demonstrating improved performance (design & operation)
- Improved letting / sales potential.

The Working Group is now reviewing the pilot projects. Feedback will be collected from key BREEAM International assessors, developers and ICSC members across Europe. Workshops will be held over the summer in various locations including Amsterdam, Paris, Berlin, Istanbul, Warsaw and Stockholm to discuss how to drive the sustainability agenda further using BREEAM. The certification will be finalized and various European initiatives such as CEN/TC 350 may also be integrated in the new version of the schemes.
