Hansteen submits planning for retail development in Darlington (GB)

Hansteen has submitted a planning application to Darlington Borough Council for the development of three retail buildings in Faverdale, Darlington.

The anchor tenant is Lidl UK, which has agreed to take 22,873ft² of space. A further 20,451ft² of retail space has been taken by Home Bargains and 1,797ft² will be developed into a Starbucks Coffee drive-through unit, making it the first in Darlington. The new scheme will also provide parking spaces for up to 263 cars and 30 bicycles.

It is intended that these three buildings comprise the initial phase of the development of the entire 10-acre site, which has the potential to be developed into future retail, leisure or mixed-use. Subject to planning approvals, construction of the first buildings will begin in early 2019.

On completion of the development, Faverdale will significantly boost the local retail offer and provide around 85 jobs to an area which has lacked significant investment.

Derek Heathwood, UK Property Director at Hansteen, said: “Submission of our planning application marks a key milestone in the delivery of a much needed retail scheme at Faverdale. This development will provide significant economic and social benefits to the local community.”

Lidl UK’s Regional Head of Property, David Murphy, commented: “We are delighted to be opening a second store in Darlington, which marks another milestone in our ambitious store expansion programme. We’ve seen incredible demand for Lidl stores across the country and look forward to offering our quality products and incredible value to shoppers in and around Faverdale very soon.”
