First stone laid for Mediacité in Liege (BE)

On Tuesday 19 June, 2007, the first stone was laid of Mediacité in Liege, Belgium. Mediacité is aiming to bring life back into an entire district by setting up on a site of more than 6 ha, 160,000 m² of shopping, leisure, cultural and economic activities. The total investment of this innercity project amounts to €230 million.

The first stone ceremony took place after a press conference with Peter Wilhelm, CEO of Wilhelm & Co., Jean-Claude Marcourt, minister of Economics and Labour of the Walloon region, Willy Demeyer, Mayor of the city of Liege, and Jean-Paul Philippot, Managing Director of the RTBF radio and television channel, and a presentation of the Mediacité project by Ron Arad, the architect of Mediacité.

Located in the heart of Liege, Médiacité is a genuine multi-functional development project elaborated by the developers/planners Wilhelm & Co. Mediacité will consist of:
  • a 59,000 m² shopping and leisure center which will offer, on two levels, an attractive shopping area with several new retailers and a leisure center which will bring together a multiplex cinema, an Olympic skating rink, a fitness center, a bowling alley and a huge restaurant and café area.
  • an economic center focused on the media. Within this area RTBF will base its entertainment production center.
  • 2,300 parking spaces and nine bus services with stops located at the entrance of the center

Mediacité will become a popular gathering place for the region's residents. The complex is easily accessible by the 950,000 inhabitants of the catchment area which extends to Maastricht in the Netherlands (20 km) and to the German border (40 km).
