ECE and ESTATEMENT GmbH to plan new HQ for large accident insurance company (DE)

There is something going on in the Barmbek train station redevelopment area in Hamburg: on the municipal plot at the former bus station north of the city train and underground train station, the project developer ECE from Hamburg together with ESTATEMENT GmbH plans to realize new headquarters for a large accident insurance company.

The investment volume for the new quarter amounts to around €80 million.


The insurance company based in Hamburg for many decades is looking for a new building to house 550 employees as of 2015.

The construction project has a gross aboveground floor area of approx. 26,200 m², 1,300 m² of which is intended for retail and gastronomy. Furthermore, an underground car park with approx. 240 car parking spaces is to be constructed. The investment volume for the new quarter at Barmbek train station amounts to around €80 million.

The project area borders in the west directly on the vacated Hertie building and comprises parts of the former bus station and a car park at the northern part of the city train and underground train station Barmbek.

The pre-sale planning phase for the 5,270 m² large municipal plot was already granted to the investor. Procurement of the planning permission is scheduled for the next months. After granting of the building permission, excavation of the site could start next summer. Planned date of completion is March 2015.

As initial spark and urban development key project, the new headquarters of the insurance company is to contribute to the vitalization and upgrading of the overall Barmbek center. With its attractive architectonical design and a highlight, the building ensemble is setting a self-confident example at this central location. The plan is guided by the ideas of the renewal concept launched by the district together with the redevelopment committee and with participation of the public.

Further upgrading of the urban space and vitalization of the shopping street Fuhlsbüttler Strasse is to be realized with the district-planned pedestrian arcade from the city train and underground train station Barmbek towards 'Fuhle' – with attractive squares, cafés, restaurants, retail and green areas.

The insurance company, whose lease contract expires in 2015, prefers this location among others due to the excellent traffic connection, accessibility and the integrated location.
