City Hall plans to purchase the Continental Hotel in Cluj-Napoca

The mayor of Cluj-Napoca, Emil Boc, has announced his intention to purchase the Continental Hotel, located at the zero point of the city. The City Hall will buy the building if it is put up for sale, and the mayor is determined to acquire it, regardless of the price.

This year, the municipality's general budget is €721m, with a development section of €406m. This represents an increase of 25% compared to last year, largely due to the projects financed by European funds. However, last year ended with a budget surplus of approximately €96.5m from the development budget. Mayor Emil Boc has designated these unused funds as a “working fund” to ensure continuity for the city's development projects. The City Hall must have financial resources to be able to purchase the Continental Hotel.

In the spring of last year, Deputy Mayor Dan Tarcea explained that the City Hall cannot buy all the buildings in the city centre, as is the case with the Melody Hotel, which was purchased and rehabilitated by the Sapientia Foundation. However, the City Hall will exercise its right of pre-emption for the purchase of the Continental Hotel.

At the end of 2022, the City Hall acquired the BCR building in the George Bari?iu Street area for €5.8m. Certain departments of the local administration will be transferred to this space.
