Bishops Place granted approval by Hackney Councils planning committee (UK)

The London Borough of Hackney approved Hammerson's Bishops Place Regeneration Project at its planning committee on November 4, 2009 following amendments to the proposals.

The revised scheme includes 233 Shoreditch High Street (the Light Bar building) and will open up a 1.3-hectare site in the heart of London, which is currently largely inaccessible to the public.

The 1.5 million ft² (approx. 140,000 m²) project, designed by Foster + Partners, includes high-quality offices, residential, a hotel, serviced apartments and a mix of retail space. The site will also accommodate 50 affordable housing units, comprising a mix of shared ownership and rental properties.

As well as including 233 Shoreditch High Street, the revisions to the scheme also see an increase in public open space, with 48% of the scheme's footprint now allocated for public realm.

Martin Jepson, Managing Director, London Group, commented: "Bishops Place is an important catalyst for further investment within Hackney and the unanimous support of members demonstrates their commitment to regeneration in the area. The scheme is a vital part of Hammerson's ongoing commitment to Shoreditch and we are looking forward to working with the Council in helping to deliver its long-term vision for the borough."
