Bilfinger Berger wins €20m German construction contract (DE)

Together with the District of Unna, Bilfinger Berger is realizing Germany´s first public-private partnership (PPP) project involving an administration building. The company will restore, expand and operate for 25 years the headquarters of the district administration in Unna, as well as modernize and operate two additional public buildings in the city. The KfW IPEX-Bank is the financial partner in this PPP project, which has a total investment volume of € 20 million.

Wolfferts, a Bilfinger Berger Group company since 2002, will carry out the facility management during the operating phase. After successfully expanding its service activities over the last two years, Bilfinger Berger is now one of Germany´s leading real estate services companies.

The Bilfinger Berger Group has many years of experience in realizing and operating privately financed buildings for the public authorities. The PPP arrangement under which Bilfinger Berger designed, financed and built the British Embassy in Berlin, and contracted to operate it for 30 years, is considered a model. Additional PPP projects being realized by Bilfinger Berger include a number of schools, hospitals and medical centers in England, some of which are already in operation, as well as two prisons in Australia´s State of Victoria.

Projects like the district administration headquarters in Unna illustrate the growing importance of PPP projects in Germany. In an effort to encourage PPPs as a way of helping meet the country´s needs for public buildings, the Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Housing has set up a national competence center for this area. Thanks to its extensive know-how in PPPs, Bilfinger Berger is in an excellent position to profit from Germany´s growing acceptance of this innovative financing model.
