At the annual BCSC Gold Awards recently held at The Grosvenor Hotel in London and attended by around 1000 industry leaders, SouthGate, Bath won a prestigious Gold award.
The award for Best Shopping Center was collected by Chris Paterson of Aviva Investors and Paul Sargent of Multi Development, the two companies which formed the successful joint venture that funded and developmed the scheme.
Paul Sargent said: "Shopping centers are often criticized for looking the same, so we're thrilled that the judges appreciated that we took a totally unique approach with SouthGate. Architecturally the open plan, streets and squares based design that extensively uses local stone allows SouthGate, Bath to merge seamlessly with the rest of the city.
"The center builds on tradition but has been created with a very modern understanding of what contemporary retailers and shoppers demand ."
Chris Paterson said: "We are absolutely delighted to have won this award. SouthGate Bath has been a fantastic project and has brought vitality and activity to a part of the city that was previously unloved and in decline. This has been a long-term project which I know every member of the delivery team feels passionate about. At last, Bath has a modern development that compliments rather than competes with the city's existing retail provision and which has brought many retailers that are new to Bath."
This is the second major award for SouthGate coming hard on the heels of the scheme receiving the Giles Worsley award from the Georgian Group. This award recognizes high-quality new buildings that have been built in a Georgian context.
The center is also shortlisted for the 'ICSC European Shopping Center Awards', which will be awarded later in 2011.
