The launch of Amsterdam’s €200m Y-Towers hotel, congress centre and residential area development project on the north bank of the IJ waterway opposite the city centre will propel the Dutch capital into one of Europe’s top conference markets after completion in 2020, the head of Germany’s largest owner-managed hotel group predicts.

Monika Gommolla, owner of the Maritim Hotel Group, said: “Amsterdam is an extremely attractive convention destination with its historic centre and cultural heritage, but it has mostly lacked the large central venues needed to attract the biggest conference organisers. We are creating the city’s single largest capacity conference location in a stunning waterfront setting across from its central railway station. With the opening of a new metro link from the future Maritim Hotel Congress Centre to the RAI trade fair grounds in the south, we expect Amsterdam to rise further in the rankings one of the top convention centres in Europe."

She was speaking at the ground-breaking ceremony for the Y-Towers held at the top of the A’DAM Tower next to the construction site in late-June and hosted by the project’s Austrian family-owned investor-developer IES Immobilien and investors INVESTER United Benefits. General contractor ZÜBLIN Nederland is to deliver the two towers for an estimated investment of approximately €200million. The current market value of the project is put at approximately €360 million.

The four-star Maritim Hotel is to be housed in a 110-metre tower, which will be the third tallest in Amsterdam, and have 597 rooms. The conference and congress centre will be located in a plinth building at the base of the tower and have the capacity to host a total of 4,000 people.

The second 101-metre high tower will provide 24,000 m² of residential space divided into around 250 high quality apartments, with 150 in the upper floors to be sold to private buyers in the prime end of Amsterdam’s supplyconstrained housing market, and the remaining 100 units rented under extended-stay contracts. The building’s flexible floor plan will offer five different apartment sizes, from penthouses to studios. Each will feature a private loggia or balcony, while residents will benefit from direct access to the hotel’s spa and wellness area.
