Weston Homes secures planning for new €394m London urban village (GB)

Weston Homes and the Estates & Agency Group have received planning permission to regenerate the 6 acre Abbey Retail Park in Barking into ‘Abbey Quays’, a new €394.3m (£350m) (GDV) riverside urban-village.

Covering over 110,563m², the project will provide 1,089 new homes of mixed tenure; 2,070m² of commercial/leisure space, including a new riverside pub/restaurant; a 637m² Max Whitlock MBE athletes training centre/gym; 1,071m² of employment space; 470m² of community space, including a community hall such as local community events and children’s parties; and a community-hub/reception for accepting/meeting deliveries/visitors for residents. The scheme is located within a new high-quality public realm that includes public artwork, landscaping, a new riverside walkway and a waterside plaza with spectacular rill water feature. The scheme was designed by architectural practice Broadway Malyan

Bob Weston, Chairman & Chief Executive of Weston Homes said: “The regeneration of this important gateway site into a new waterfront urban-village adjacent to Barking Town Centre forms part of the Borough Council’s vision of bringing aspirational waterfront living to Barking. The €394.3m (£350m) ‘Abbey Quays’ is one of the biggest urban renewal projects in East London, delivering striking new buildings, riverside public spaces, inward investment and job creation. The regenerated site will provide much needed affordable local housing for local Londoners, further enhance the local community and complement the existing centre.”
