Planning submitted in next step towards £22 mln Eldon Sq refurbishment (UK)

Capital Shopping Centres (CSC) has submitted a planning application for the Northumberland Street entrance of Eldon Square, marking the next stage in an exciting refurbishment that is designed to enhance Newcastle's status as one of the UK's top retail cities.

The planning application includes reconfiguration and redevelopment of the entrance and two adjoining retail units, and the addition of an extended roof canopy over the new entrance.

This follows the announcement made in December last year that joint owners, CSC and Newcastle City Council, plan to invest £22 mln (approx. €27 mln) in a modernization program of Eldon Square which will enhance existing malls by upgrading ceilings, entrances and interiors.

The mall enhancement will increase the attractiveness of units for retailers and provide an enhanced sense of 'arrival' for Eldon Square's 36 million annual shoppers.

Martin Breeden, Asset Management Director at CSC said: "The scheme will add to the vibrancy and vitality of the city center and build on Newcastle's success as one of the UK's best retail cities."

Eldon Square is one of the largest city center shopping centers in the UK, occupying 1.35 mln ft² (approx. 125,415 m²) with 151 stores, and is the premier retail pitch in Newcastle City Center.

A decision on planning is expected by mid-August.
