NCC’s Loop Rocks start-up entering Denmark

Construction in Toronto

Loop Rocks, NCC’s virtual marketplace that matches supply and demand for earth and rock between construction sites, is now entering Denmark. Loop Rocks open platform and app already have more than 4,000 users in Sweden, and NCC sees a similar need for more sustainable and efficient management of building material in Denmark.

Martin Manthorpe, Head of Strategy and Business Development at NCC in Denmark said: “Denmark is our first step outside Sweden for Loop Rocks. We see major potential for smarter, more eco-friendly and cheaper management of construction waste between various construction sites. As we scale up Loop Rocks outside Sweden, we are challenging ourselves and the industry, while also enabling others to connect to the ecosystem we are building up.

Launched in Sweden one year ago, Loop Rocks is an open platform and app that enables more efficient handling of rock, earth and other secondary materials at construction sites between businesses and individuals. NCC uses Loop Rocks to match supply and demand for used materials at construction sites by “looping” the materials directly between sites, to prevent most of the building materials from being sent to landfill, which is what happens today. The app can be downloaded free of charge and is available for both iOS and Android.

Anders Torell, Head of Business Transformation and Digitalization at NCC Industry, and Loop Rocks said: “In Sweden, development has traveled at lightning speed. Since the launch less than one year ago, we have handled more than 1.2m tons of material via the app, have over 4,000 users and connected more than 1,000 construction sites across Sweden.”

In Denmark, the market for handling earth and rock is currently valued at approximately €133m (13bn SEK).
