Goodman and Kuehne+Nagel celebrated the topping out of a new 14,000m2 facility that will serve as the international logistics service provider’s regional hub, ahead of completion expected in the summer of 2016.

Goodman acquired a 70,000m2 site in Großbeeren freight village (GVZ) near Berlin to develop the new logistics centre. With the potential for the aforementioned facility to be expanded by 10,000m2, Goodman is taking advantage of strong demand for high quality, well located logistics space in Germany with the additional speculative development of a 20,000m2 facility on the same site.

Because of its strategic location, the new logistics centre will be an important hub for Kuehne+Nagel in the Berlin region and the international logistics service provider will use it mainly for its contract logistics and sea freight business units

“Goodman is a long-standing real estate partner,” said Alexander Hornung, Kuehne+Nagel regional manager for eastern Germany. “Because of the multimodal connections around the Großbeeren freight village, we will be able to increase our operational efficiency and reach a large customer base.”

Goodman currently manages a portfolio of 130,000m2 of logistics space for Kuehne+Nagel in Germany, with a total space of 390,000m2 managed for the customer in eight countries around the world.

In addition to storage space, the new facility will also provide Kuehne+Nagel with offices and social areas. To reduce energy consumption costs, the building will be fitted with LED lighting throughout. On the basis of the new assessment criteria of the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB), the property will receive a gold certificate on completion.

“We are further strengthening our long-standing relationship with Kuehne+Nagel with this state-of-the-art facility in Großbeeren freight village,” said Christof Prange, Goodman head of business development in Germany. “Furthermore, the acquisition of this prime plot of land enables us to offer other customers access to one of the most sought after logistics locations in Germany, with the development of a new speculative facility.”

The new speculative development in Großbeeren freight village is being undertaken in response to the extremely low vacancy rate for modern logistics properties in the Berlin market. It comprises 20,000m2 of logistics space, which can be divided into two units if required. Goodman is also currently developing another 13,000m2 facility speculative unit in the key logistics region of Nuremberg.
