Construction of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center in Athens to start soon (GR)

According to Greek newspaper Kathimerini, the agreement for the start of construction of one of the biggest private projects in Greece is expected to be signed within a few days.

The Stavros Niarchos Foundation is one step closer to the implementation of its ambitious Cultural Center, as it appears that a few days ago the joint venture that will undertake the construction of the scheme was selected by the Foundation. The Cultural Center will be built in Delta Falirou with GEK-TERNA SA and Impreglio as the temporary contractors. The investment value of the project amounts to €566 million.

The total surface of the plot is 240,000 m², out of which the Cultural Center and a landscaped park will occupy 210,000 m². The remaining 30,000 m² will host a municipal sports park for the Municipality of Kallithea. 85% of the plot will be devoted to green areas and public spaces, while the built space will include two new buildings for the National Library and the National Opera, with a 100 m x 100 m green roof.

This project will be a part of the general regeneration of the Faliro bay, which extends over 76 hectares. Its construction is expected to contribute €340 million to the country’s economic activity and to provide employment for 1,500-2,400 people per year, as well as creating 250 permanent jobs.

The project dates from 2009, when the Stavros Niarchos Foundation signed an agreement with the Greek State for the implementation of a new Cultural Center. After its construction, the project will be delivered to the State, which will be in charge of its management.
